Your mindset is a powerful predictor for how successful you will be in sales. With the right mindset, you will keep pushing toward your goals and keep a positive outlook, even when you face challenges. Being able to develop and stay in the right mindset can make all the difference in whether you experience a fulfilling sales career—or whether you stay in mediocrity.

Bestselling author and speaker Anthony Iannarino says that while technology and tools are helpful in sales, they can only take you so far. To be truly successful, you must learn to build a success-oriented mindset.

In this issue of Promotional Consultant Today, we share Iannarino’s insights into how you can create a superstar sales mindset.

Look to the future. You have the power to shape your future by how you live your life today. Are you dreaming big, setting goals and putting in the work? Make sure you take control of how you spend your time in sales. If you allow yourself to get caught up in distractions, you might end up in a future place that is less than what you hoped.

Learn to be become independent. According to Iannarino, the most important way to be of value to your clients and colleagues is to become self-reliant. This is not because you do not care about others but because you know you can make something out of yourself. Establish your independence and always strive to add value. Others will recognize your worth and want to partner with you.

Embrace a can-do attitude. To master a success-oriented mindset, you can’t give up when things don’t go your way. Instead, you must develop a can-do, will-do attitude. Iannarino says sales professionals should not underestimate the importance of resourcefulness, determination and initiative. When these attributes are powered by the right attitude, positive results are bound to happen.

Care about your work. Iannarino likes to close his emails with, “do good work.” To him, it means imbuing his work with a high level of caring. He always asks how he can make something better, even when he is doing well. When you remember your purpose and you truly care about the work you do every day, you will start an upward climb toward better results and more success.

Go after success. Success doesn’t come to you—you have to be willing to invest the commitment, energy and effort to make it happen. You can’t ignore success and you can’t have a big vision for your career or your life if you are not willing to take action to make it happen. Be willing to pursue what success looks like to you.

Refrain from complaining. Another way to master a sales mindset is to learn how to shoulder your hardships without complaining. Yes, you will face difficulties and life will be hard sometimes. But when you give in to complaining or responding emotionally in the moment, you limit your long-term success, says Iannarino. Remind yourself of what you have overcome in the past and keep going.

Aim to grow. Iannarino says that you are creating the person who comes after the person you are right now. This means you should always be working to learn new things and improve yourself in order to reach your full potential. Don’t get complacent. Always look for ways to grow your wisdom, competency and contribution.

Sales takes tenacity, grit and a willingness to go the extra mile. It also takes the right mindset. You can start to cultivate a success-oriented sales mindset by keeping your future goals in mind, staying positive and enthusiastically going after what you want.
